ASCENT TO MISTI VOLCANO / AGUADA BLANCA DAM - NORTH ROUTE
RESERVA RNSAB
MISTI VOLCANO
FIRST DAY
Our 4x4 transport picks up tourist from their respective hotels at 09:00 hours, we leave from the city of Arequipa located at 2325 m.a.s.l., towards the Misti volcano. We’ll take the road via Cabrerías until 4000 m.a.s.l.
On the way between the city of Arequipa (2325 m.a.s.l.) and the 4000 meters (as far as the car takes us) we can observe the South American camelids like vicuñas in full freedom, within the National Reserve of Salinas and Aguada Blanca. Within this reserve we can also observe some rapacious birds such as the falcon and the eagle, and rarely the condor. In this area there’s also a bird that is half scavenger and half rapa, this bird has the local name Cara Cara. And if we’re lucky we can see some wild guanacos that are a kind of wild South American camelid.
In this National Reserve we can also see a kind of rabbit from the Andes named Vizcacha and if we’re lucky some Andean foxes. Arriving at the base of the Misti volcano, our hike begins. The ascent will last approximately four hours until we reach the Monte Blanco camp at 4800 m.a.s.l.
SECOND DAY
We’ll start the ascent at 04:00 hours towards the summit of the Misti volcano (5825 m.a.s.l.). During the ascent we’ll see the sunrise from the Misti volcano, this is the best part of this ascent. Of course, this dawn is impossible if we climb the Misti on the south side.
This day, to get to the top of the Misti volcano we need to walk between 5/6 hours approximately. At the moment of arriving at the summit we‘ll see an iron cross, in the summit of the Misti volcano we can stay about 20 minutes approximately to appreciate the incredible mountain range of the Andes and especially the fire belt (set of volcanoes aligned in the south of Peru).
The fire belt is composed of a set of aligned volcanoes: Misti, Chachani, Ubinas, Sabancaya, Ampato,Coropuna and Hualca Hualca.
For the descent we’ll cross through some dunes and volcanic ash, this makes our descent easier and at the same time fun. The descent will take us a maximum of an hour and a half to reach the 4100 m.a.s.l. of altitude to meet again with our 4x4 truck.
Meeting with our truck approximately at 12:30 hours, arrival in the city of Arequipa approximately at 14:30 hours to the hotel or to the prefered place.
