ASCENT TO CHACHANI VOLCANO - 2D/1N
FIRST DAY - AREQUIPA - BASE CAMP
At 08:30 hours in the morning we begin our adventure, we’ll go out of the Arequipa city, in a 4x4 truck that is the only vehicle capable of reaching the volcano. We’ll reach our starting point at 5,000 m.a.s.l. after about two and a half hours and from there we’ll climb 300 meters to the place where we’re going to establish our base camp. We’ll make a small reconnaissance walk through the base camp and rest. (Chachani doesn’t have permanent polar ice caps or glaciers, and the amount of ice and snow has been reduced, so during certain months you may not need to use the crampons and the ice ax for the climb).
SECOND DAY - PICO DE ANGEL - PICO DE FÁTIMA - SUMMIT OF CHACHANI
This day we’ll get up early, at 02:30 hours in the morning, we’ll have a hot coca tea and a hearty breakfast. We’ll leave the equipment at the base camp, we’ll take our backpacks and start the climb to the top. Ice and snow cover the peak of the Angel (5,825 m.a.s.l.), from where we can see the white city of Arequipa.
From there, we’ll cross another snow-covered stretch, continuing the zigzag climb along the south face of Fátima to its highest point (5900 m.a.s.l.) This is where we’ll have our final goal in sight. Fátima as we approach the final stretch, we’ll have a five or six hour climb to the top of Chachani (6080 m.a.s.l.), from here we’ll see the Arequipa region in all its splendor, we’ll see the snow-capped mountains of Coropuna, Hualca Hualca , Sabancaya and Ubinas, Misti Volcano, the White City of Arequipa, and the surrounding countryside, all the way up from the base camp to the top of the Chachani volcano, it’ll take us six to nine hours depending on our speed. Back to the camp will be much faster, it will only take us between 2 and 3 hours After packing the camp we’ll go to the meeting of our transport, and we’ll return to the city of Arequipa at approximately 15:00 hours.
